France, welcome to the capital of Alsace!
Strasbourg awaits for you with its picturesque historic center overlooking the canals, half-timbered houses, medieval buildings, a spectacular Gothic cathedral. and many gastronomic delights accompanied by wonderful Alsatian wines.
Strasbourg has experienced the difficult identity of a border city, the subject of territorial, political and military disputes for centuries. The city was annexed and ceded many times, alternating under the rule of Germany and France. Witness the fountain of Giano Bifronte, which with its two faces symbolizes the double political identity as a precious resource, capable of reconciling French refinement with German pragmatism.
Ready to discover the wonders of Strasbourg?
We’re off to a great start with a visit to the superb Notre Dame Cathedral, a spectacular masterpiece of Gothic art and a symbol of the city. It took around three centuries of work to complete this “prodigy of grandeur and grace” as Victor Hugo describes it.
The façade is adorned with an imposing parade of statues, while the interior houses the splendid Pillar of the Angels, which represents the Last Judgment, the pulpit in flamboyant Gothic style with around fifty characters, the large organ with Gothic wooden cases carved polychrome, the incredible windows including the splendid rose window 14 meters in diameter.
A must stop at the Astronomical Clock, a masterpiece of watchmaking and mathematics created in 1547. Every day at 12.30, the clock comes to life and triggers a parade of angels and saints. If you want to take a closer look at the spire and copper roofs and enjoy a breathtaking view, climb onto the platform and after 330 steps, at a height of 66 metres, you will be rewarded
A stone’s throw from the Cathedral we find Palazzo Rohan. Its construction was completed in 1742 and is a witness to princely art in the 18th century. Of classic style, the architecture is inspired by the great Parisian hotels. Inside, three museums await you: the Fine Arts, the Archeology and the Decorative Arts which reserve a gem for us – Napoleon’s bedroom.
After leaving the palace, take a look at Lieu 5, an interesting interactive history of the city, and not far away La Cour du Corbeau, an extraordinary Renaissance complex, now a splendid prestigious hotel.
LA PETITE FRANCE
Without a doubt the most romantic part of the city. Enjoy a walk along the riverside and admire the reflections of the colorful facades of the ancient houses which are magically reflected in the Ill river, crossed by suggestive bridges.
THE FAMOUS BRIDGES OF STRASBOURG
Faisan, “The Swinging Bridge” who imposes his will on all passers-by. You may have to wait to cross it, as it will have been turned around to allow a tourist boat to pass. The Saint-Martin bridge, a nearby stone bridge, offers you postcard views: selfie – souvenir guaranteed. Ponts Couvert, with three towers, austere and massive, vestiges of the medieval wall, the mighty Vauban Dam, panoramic terrace offering a grandiose view of the city
We arrived in a neighborhood built to transform Strasbourg into a showcase of Prussian power, characterized by large squares and wide tree-lined avenues often enriched by architectural extravagances in Art Nouveau style.

Among the most notable: The Egyptian House, Rue du Général-Rapp, a mixture of Art Nouveau and Orientalism, Palais des Fêtes, Rue Sellénick, one of the first appearances of Art Nouveau in Strasbourg Villa Brion, Rue Sleidan: the example most successful of the Jugendstil, La Maison, Rue du Général de Castelnau the most beautiful Art Nouveau building in Strasbourg, Villa Knopf, 10 Rue Schiller between Renaissance and Art Nouveau and the Villa à l’italienne, Allée de la Robertsa, imposing villa built for the brewer Schutzenberger.

Place de la République, monumental complex, including the Palais du Rhinla surmounted by a majestic dome, is the second French library by number of books, has more than 3 million documents., Avenue de la Liberté, called the Champs Elysées of Strasbourg.

FOOD
You will discover the winstubs, ambassadors of true Alsatian cuisine, rich and generous. Among the traditional dishes are the baeckeoffe, a succulent stew of mixed meats, with a side of potatoes, the spätzle, strips of pasta, often proposed as a side dish to a dish of hare, game or any other meat in sauce, the lewerknepfle, liver meatballs made with grandmother’s recipe
Not to mention the foie gras of Alsace (it is said that it was born right here) a splendid appetizer, especially when accompanied by a glass of “late harvests”, a must: a rich and fragrant choucroute and tarte flambée, savory puff pastry with cheese, cream, bacon and onion, don’t miss the delicious white asparagus and seal your meal with the exquisite local cheeses and the irresistible eclair sweets.
AND IN THE GLASS?
The extraordinary Alsatian vineyard offers high quality wines. Many producers today choose to make organic or natural wines. The Alsace wine route, in addition to its wonderful route on the slopes of the Vosges, is a captivating adventure. Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, many qualities of Muscat, from Petits Grains to Ottonel, while Pinot Grigio is locally called Tokay Pinot Gris or Tokay d’Alsace. All to try!
WHERE TO EAT
La Hache
One of the oldest winstubs in the city, a lively, gourmet and warm place, also known for its carefully selected wine list which includes more than fifty references from all regions of France. Here the advices from the attractive host Jada Sharara: a very French (and delicious) moelle gratinee, foie de veau, veau marengo, tartare, French tiramisu with a base of crumbled Oreos.

Rediscover the ancient national stud farm of Strasbourg, a magical and secret place, built in the mid-18th century along the medieval ramparts of the city, housed in the former national stud farm of Strasbourg. The great classics of French cuisine find their place here, alongside Alsatian specialties or inspirations from all over the world.
After a pleasant aperitif on the terrace with Muscat and pretzels, I followed the suggestions of Chef Francois Baur with his large team of 26 people.

Baur offers traditional cuisine with contemporary accents. The menu includes sweetbreads, lamb burgers, frog legs, pateè en croute, river fish. Grand finale thanks to the very young Maitre Patissier Tina Tran delights us with her creations, including the delicious rhubarb, white chocolate and currant cake…

Le tire bouchon
French-inspired cuisine, served to the rhythm of the seasons and ancestral recipes, carefully handed down from generation to generation. The dishes created by Chef Chlouti Brahim are authentic, simple and tasty, generous and tasty. Among the specialties we find slow cooked pork cheeks, royal sauerkraut, braised ham, les escargots. a white cheese tart, river fish, flavored cheeses served with dry or fruity wines from regional vineyards.
Two musts: the choucroute royale, perhaps the most representative dish of the Alsatian territory, and a truly special dessert: the rhubarb pie.

The suggestive stairs (one is in stone dating back to 1700) lead to the rooms, spacious and furnished with period taste, a real dive into the past. The hotel offers an elegant spa available to customers and the possibility of a drink on the charming terrace.
In the morning a highly refined breakfast awaits you served in a room decorated with bucolic frescoes. The buffet also offers typical Alsatian products in cured meats and desserts, the traditional kougelhopt cannot be missing, a kind of pandoro with candied fruit, considered the national dessert of Alsace.

Really a great start to the day!
Discover the new concept Ici&Là restaurant and bar for a drink and something to eat in a modern, cozy place. The restaurant offers a rather small menu, which, in my opinion, means a guarantee of fresh, daily food. I enjoyed an excellent lentil soup and the house’s signature dish: smoked kassler with a munster cheese sauce, the most representative of Alsace.
To finish with an excellent mousse au chocolat
